The proportion of 3- to 5-year-olds receiving special education services.
Why is this important?
Preschool special education services can improve children's cognitive performance, reduce the need for special education services in grades K-12, and improve the likelihood of success in school.
How is Dutchess County performing?
In 2014, 8.0% of preschoolers in Dutchess County received special education services, above the rate of 5.9% for the state (excluding NYC) and the rates for Ulster (6.5%) and Orange (6.1%). Dutchess's rate increased 63% from 2000 through 2014, compared to a 16% statewide increase over the same period, and remained the highest in the region.
