Dutchess County Overview
Dutchess has held its economic ground in recent years by continuing to have the lowest poverty rates and highest median household income in the region, despite steady job losses since 2000. The population in Dutchess is increasingly more educated, and leads the region in adults that have bachelor’s or higher degrees. Dutchess also had the largest percentage increase of high school graduation rates in both the state and region since 2008. Dutchess is not without challenges, however. Rates of child poverty and abuse are rising, housing is increasingly unaffordable, and the performance of fourth-graders on state tests is below state levels.
The overviews and data presented in this report serve to highlight positive characteristics that Dutchess County continues to develop, as well as note the challenges that the community faces, in hopes of helping the community set a firm foundation for continued growth.
