Contributions to charitable organizations, measured as an average per tax return filed.
Why is this important?
Charitable giving supports a wide variety of organizations, including those that provide essential services to the community and people in need. The level of giving shows residents' willingness to invest in programs and organizations serving the community.
How is Orange County performing?
In 2013 the average charitable contribution in Orange County was $1,121, slightly above the $1,059 in the region, yet below the $1,313 in the state (excluding NYC) and $1,267 in the nation. Orange County's average contribution level was down 20% from about $1,409 in 2002, similar to the decline in the region. Giving at the state and national level has also fallen, though at a slower rate (16% and 11%, respectively). Orange County's average contribution level was slightly below that in Dutchess but higher than in Ulster.
