Preschoolers Receiving Special Education Services
What does this measure?
The proportion of 3- to 5-year-olds receiving special education services.
Why is this important?
Preschool special education services can improve children's cognitive performance, reduce the need for special education services in grades K-12, and improve the likelihood of success in school.
How is Orange County performing?
In 2014, 6.1% of preschoolers in Orange County received special education services, just above the state (excluding NYC) rate of 5.9% and below the rates in both Ulster (6.5%) and Dutchess (8.0%). The rate of preschoolers receiving special education services in Orange increased 54% from 2000 to 2014, substantially more than the statewide increase of 16% and similar to the increases in Dutchess and Ulster. Orange's rates of preschoolers receiving special education services were the lowest in the region throughout the decade.
