Why is this important?
Charitable giving supports a wide variety of organizations, including those that provide essential services to the community and people in need. The level of giving shows residents' willingness to invest in programs and organizations serving the community.
How is the region performing?
In 2013, the average charitable contribution in the Mid-Hudson Valley region was $1,059, below the $1,313 in the state (excluding NYC) and $1,267 in the nation. The region's average contribution was down 21% from about $1,338 in 2002, compared to declines of 16% in the state (excluding NYC) and 11% in the nation. Residents in Dutchess County had the highest average charitable contribution in the region at $1,152 in 2013, followed by Orange ($1,121) and Ulster ($769) counties.
