Preschoolers Receiving Special Education Services
What does this measure?
The proportion of 3- to 5-year-olds receiving special education services.
Why is this important?
Preschool special education services can improve children's cognitive performance, reduce the need for special education services in grades K-12, and improve the likelihood of success in school.
How is Ulster County performing?
In 2014, 6.5% of preschoolers in Ulster County received special education services, above the state (excluding NYC) rate of 5.9%. Ulster's rate rose 49% from 2000 to 2014, compared to a 16% increase for the state (excluding NYC) as a whole over the same period. 2014 was the sixth consecutive year in which Ulster's rate was higher than the state's rate.
